Call for research using the collections of the BnF's Department of Maps and PlansResearch using the collections of the BnF's Department of Maps and Plans As part of a collaboration with the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the colloquium aims to highlight research undertaken using the collections of the BnF's Department of Maps and Plans. The aim is to shed light on the representations of the construction of territories and towns and to examine their scientific, educational and civic value. We also want to discuss how they can be used in new cartographic practices. We are therefore launching a call for poster proposals using the BnF's collections to explore contemporary cartographic uses and practices. The BnF has a collection of almost 800,000 maps and plans (including around 80,000 free cartographic documents in Gallica), which provide an insight into the gradual development of cartographic science. Is it possible to construct a reflection on the contexts of cartographic production that can feed into contemporary initiatives? In other words, by mobilising maps from the past with their multiple semiologies, is it possible to take a fresh look at our contemporary practices and nurture future ones? Is the memory of past cartographic practices capable of questioning the technical trajectories of current cartography? Is it possible to create a counter-history of cartography? The afternoon session on Wednesday 9 September 2026 will be devoted to presenting this exploratory work through an exhibition and discussion of posters submitted by the research teams as part of workshops to be held at the BnF. These posters may examine : - the educational and artistic issues involved in using historical maps to explore different semiologies, - the scientific challenges of using historical maps as sources of inspiration for new semiologies capable of fuelling counter-mapographic imaginations, - the civic issues involved in using historical maps to defend contemporary causes by shifting the focus of attention, - the creation of new counter-cartographic archives, particularly within ephemeral collectives that do not integrate their practices with publication. Teams from the BNF will accompany the three workshops presenting its collections on the following dates: - 16 December 2025, 10.30am-12.30pm - 20 January 2026, 14:30-16:30 - 17 February 2026, 10.30am-12.30pm These workshops will welcome a maximum of 20 participants per session and require prior registration. They are based around general presentations of the collections, followed by presentations of original documents representative of these collections. The aim is to shed light on the way in which the collections have been built up over time, and to show the diversity of cartographic techniques and symbolisations. Notes of intent are due by 1 December 2025 via the protocol submit a proposal. They should explain the research theme and justify the motivation to work with the BnF collections. Teams should specify on which of the three workshop dates they would like to meet the BnF teams and how many people will be in their group so that we can allocate the available places. Poster proposals are due by 6 April 2026 via the same procedure.

Forschung in den Sammlungen der Abteilung Karten und Pläne der BnF Im Rahmen einer Zusammenarbeit mit der Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) möchte das Kolloquium Forschungsarbeiten vorstellen, die anhand der Sammlungen der Abteilung für Karten und Pläne der BnF durchgeführt wurden. Ziel ist es, die Darstellung des Aufbaus von Territorien und Städten zu beleuchten und ihren wissenschaftlichen, pädagogischen und gesellschaftlichen Wert zu untersuchen. Wir möchten auch ihre mögliche Nutzung in neuen kartografischen Praktiken diskutieren. Wir rufen daher zur Einreichung von Vorschlägen für Poster auf, die die Sammlungen der BnF mit zeitgenössischen kartografischen Anwendungen und Praktiken in Zusammenhang bringen. Die BnF verfügt über einen Bestand von fast 800.000 Karten und Plänen (darunter rund 80.000 rechtefreie kartografische Dokumente in der digitalen Bibliothek Gallica), die den schrittweisen Aufbau der kartografischen Wissenschaft dokumentieren. Es sollen die Kontexte der kartografischen Produktion und ihre Bedeutung für zeitgenössische Praktiken hinterfragt werden. Die Nachmittagssitzung am Mittwoch, den 9. September 2026, ist der Präsentation dieser explorativen Arbeiten gewidmet, wobei die eingereichten Poster ausgestellt und diskutiert werden. Diese Poster können folgende Themen behandeln: - die pädagogischen und künstlerischen Fragen, die mit der Verwendung historischer Karten zur Erforschung verschiedener Semiologien verbunden sind, - die wissenschaftlichen Herausforderungen bei der Nutzung historischer Karten als Inspirationsquellen für neue Semiologien, die gegenkartografische Vorstellungen nähren könnten, - der zeitgenössische gesellschaftliche Nutzen historischer Karten, - das Anlegen eines gegenkartografischen Archivs, insbesondere für die Werke kurzlebiger Kollektive, die keine Veröffentlichungsarbeit verfolgen. Zu diesem Anlass wird die BnF drei Führungen in ihren Sammlungen an folgenden Terminen organisieren: - 16. Dezember 2025, 10.30-12.30 Uhr - 20. Januar 2026, 14.30-16.30 Uhr - 17.
